Reasoning by analogy was the hardest type of reasoning for me to understand. At first I read all of the different types of reasoning, then I went back and wrote examples for each of them but I had a very hard time writing an example for reasoning by analogy because I didn’t understand it very well. I read up a little more on the subject and I now fully understand how to reason by analogy. Reasoning by analogy not only has to do with reasoning with similar things, like in arguing by sign, but it has to do with reasoning with two things that you are trying to compare to one another. One of the websites that I looked at to help define this type of reasoning used an example of how to argue what an orange is by saying that it is similar to an apple. it was this example that really helped me to understand how to reason by analogy, and not just reasoning by using random examples.
I am really glad you decided to do this one as well. So far the top three I do not understand are being explained in our classmates blogs. Its great! ☺ Reasoning by analogy is pretty difficult to understand, so it great that you are researching it and helping others understands it as well. Reasoning analogy is practically comparing something to another thing. That is interesting how comparing a orange with an apple is a reasoning analogy. This is a really easy type of analogy to help understand the concept. I think your explanation would have been stronger if you had several examples and explain how it is reasoning with analogy. Overall great explanation and easy to understand.
ReplyDeleteI really like your example and how you explained reason to analogy. I was also confused on that one and when I looked it up I had to keep reading and reading it until I understood what it meant. But the way you explained made it more clear to me to really understand what reason to analogy was really about. I do not know why I could not find that website you found, but i liked how it gave you an example of and orange and an apple. I would have never guessed that that is a way to reason by analogy, but after reading your definition, it totally made sense.
ReplyDeleteThe example you found from further research is very simple and clearly illustrates the point that is trying to be made in the concept of reason to analogy. Your post is very well said, straightforward, and easy to help others understand what problems could have been caused while reading about the concept in chapter twelve. I agree that the material was at times hard to decipher what the author was trying to say about the concepts, and that the ambiguous, confusing steps, so to speak, helped blur that understanding. It definitely makes sense what's trying to be said by reading your post, and the examples that you received from your research. The definition you give really gives an instant "light bulb" effect that triggers the understanding of the concept very quickly. Wonderful post! :)
